Tianeptine

Tianeptine and tianeptine salts

Tianeptine is a synthetic prescription drug in some countries, with no established cognitive-enhancement benefit for healthy adults. Compare sodium, sulfate and tablet identity before interpreting prices. Prescription dose and plasma timing data do not establish a safe nootropic regimen. Dependence, withdrawal and dangerous misuse are important concerns; U.S. FDA advises consumers to avoid tianeptine products.

What is it?

Prescription and marketplace contexts differ7
Tianeptine listings cover salts and branded medicines as well as unapproved consumer products. An offer on this page does not verify pharmaceutical quality, legal importability or suitability for cognitive enhancement.

What the human evidence answers

6

A placebo-controlled healthy-volunteer study examined one 12.5 mg dose. It found changes in emotional processing but no effect on non-emotional cognition. That experimental result is different from better everyday memory, focus or mood. Clinical antidepressant research concerns a different population.

Common NameTianeptine

Free Acid FormTianeptine free acid

03

Mechanisms of action

Mu-opioid receptor activity

7

Tianeptine activates mu-opioid receptors, proteins involved in opioid effects. Receptor and animal findings help explain its pharmacology but do not establish a cognitive benefit in people.

04

Potential effects and evidence map

Grade C: limited healthy-volunteer research includes a single-dose placebo-controlled study with emotional-processing changes but no improvement in non-emotional cognition. Prescription studies in depressed patients cannot establish healthy-user mood, memory or productivity benefits.

Typical dosages and timing

French sodium-tablet label937.5 mg/day

The French sodium-tablet label describes this daily amount in divided doses for clinical use. It is not a validated healthy-adult nootropic dose or a conversion rule for sulfate, powders or blends.

Plasma timing is not cognitive duration8

In 12 healthy volunteers, oral tianeptine reached peak plasma concentration at about 0.94 hours and parent-drug The time for blood levels to fall by half during the final elimination phase.Source averaged 2.5 hours. The metabolite MC5 persisted longer. These measures do not define a useful nootropic onset, duration, redosing interval or safe cycle.

Safety, side effects and risk profile

U.S. marketplace warning1
FDA advises consumers not to purchase or use tianeptine products. Serious reports include seizures, unconsciousness and death; many reported exposures involve doses above foreign prescription labeling, other drugs or uncertain products. These events must not be read as the ordinary-dose event rate.
Why the base rating is moderate9
For identified oral sodium tablets at prescription-range exposure, reduced alertness and withdrawal concerns are clinically meaningful, making low insufficient. Healthy-adult long-term incidence is unquantified. High or critical would incorrectly extrapolate poisoning severity to ordinary use. This rating is not approval of self-directed use.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and vulnerable groups9
The French label advises avoiding pregnancy use where possible and discourages breastfeeding during treatment. Children, people with substance-dependence history and those with severe renal or hepatic impairment need separate clinical assessment.
Legal / regulatory risk7
Confidence: High

As of October 2026, U.S. FDA does not approve tianeptine or recognize it as a dietary ingredient; prescription rules elsewhere differ.

Note Legal context does not determine physiological base risk.

3/5
A
Dependence / withdrawal risk9
Confidence: High

Withdrawal is documented after prescription use; misuse and escalating doses can produce more severe dependence.

Note Therapeutic withdrawal incidence in healthy adults is not quantified. Severe misuse is a separate exposure context.

3/5
B
Interaction risk9
Confidence: High

Irreversible MAO inhibitors carry potentially severe interaction risk. Alcohol and sedative combinations also need particular caution.

Note Targeted interaction risk, not a probability estimate for ordinary use.

3/5
B
Sedation / impairment9
Confidence: High

Drowsiness and reduced alertness can affect driving or machinery use.

Note Clinically meaningful impairment, beyond minor tolerability effects.

3/5
B
Overstimulation / insomnia1
Confidence: Medium

Sleep disruption can occur; severe agitation in poisoning or withdrawal is a separate context.

Note Do not use poisoning severity as an ordinary-dose estimate.

2/5
B
Cardiovascular caution3
Confidence: Medium

Serious cardiovascular and neurological effects occurred in an outbreak involving adulterated liquid products.

Note Targeted adulteration/exposure hazard; not incidence for verified prescription sodium tablets.

3/5
C
GI discomfort9
Confidence: High

Nausea, abdominal discomfort and constipation are possible tolerability effects.

Note Ordinary GI effects alone do not justify an elevated overall rating.

1/5
B
Evidence uncertainty6
Confidence: Medium

Healthy-user benefit, long-term use and equivalence across marketplace forms remain inadequately established.

Note Uncertainty is not itself proof of harm.

1/5
C
Misuse and overdose are different exposures1

Escalating doses and non-prescribed products have caused opioid-like toxicity and withdrawal. Breathing difficulty or unconsciousness is an emergency. A shorter plasma half-life is not a reason to redose or a guide to stopping dependence-producing use.

08

Interactions and cautions

Medication and alcohol checks1

The French label warns against irreversible MAO inhibitors and alcohol. FDA also reports serious harm in misuse involving other medicines, including antidepressants and anxiety medicines. Medication changes and withdrawal need clinical supervision; this page provides no combination or taper protocol.

Practical buying and quality notes

  • These names describe different chemical forms. Record the exact form, strength per unit, release formulation and package count. Do not assume that a sulfate listing has clinically proven longer action or that equal milligram amounts are interchangeable with prescription sodium tablets.7
  • The active TYNEPT title says tablets while the catalog classifies it as capsules. Read that as an unresolved format label, not evidence of capsule delivery or a dosing recommendation. Compare verified strength, units, shipping and local eligibility; package price alone cannot verify identity. Catalog correction remains pending.
  • CDC investigated a 2023 New Jersey outbreak involving a branded tianeptine liquid; tested products contained synthetic cannabinoids. This does not prove every tianeptine product is adulterated. It does show why a label or seller purity claim cannot substitute for traceable manufacturer and batch-specific identity testing.3

FAQ

What is the nootropic dosage?

6

No healthy-adult cognitive-enhancement regimen is established. The single-dose laboratory experiment and foreign prescription schedule answer different questions; neither validates self-directed long-term use.

How long does it last, and is cycling supported?

8

The measured plasma half-life does not tell you how long a useful cognitive effect lasts. No validated nootropic cycling schedule was identified. Dependence and withdrawal make stop-start experimentation an unreliable safety strategy.
