Atomoxetine / Strattera

Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine, sold as Strattera, is a prescription ADHD medicine, not a dietary supplement. Healthy-adult cognitive findings are limited and task-specific. Compare pharmacy prices only for the same prescribed strength and capsule count; a longer The time for blood levels to fall by half during the final elimination phase.Source does not establish a longer focus benefit.

Who should avoid this or get expert review first

This is not a recommendation to use. These groups should treat the profile as a reason to slow down and verify safety, rules, and personal context.

  • Contraindications1The U.S. label excludes use with narrow-angle glaucoma, a current or previous pheochromocytoma (an adrenal tumor), a serious allergy to the medicine, or severe cardiovascular disorders that would worsen with raised pulse or blood pressure.
01

What is it?

What the clinical evidence means

4

A 24-week trial randomized 502 adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to atomoxetine or placebo. ADHD symptom scores improved more with atomoxetine; 68% versus 42% met the study response threshold. Anxiety and depression measures did not significantly change. These are clinical symptom outcomes, not evidence that people without ADHD become more productive.

Healthy volunteers: a narrow positive result

2

In a three-arm experiment involving 60 healthy men, a single 60 mg dose improved response inhibition: stopping an action already underway. It did not improve probabilistic learning, sustained attention, or subjective alertness. A laboratory result in young men cannot establish lasting benefits for daily work or study.

Another task did not improve

3

A separate crossover study of 27 healthy participants found no significant atomoxetine benefit for consciously noticing performance errors. Different cognitive tasks need separate evidence; neither a positive stopping-task result nor a drug mechanism proves general enhancement.

Mechanisms of action

Norepinephrine, not a performance guarantee

6

Atomoxetine slows the reuptake of norepinephrine, a chemical messenger involved in attention and behavioral control. This describes its pharmacology; the practical question is whether a specific outcome improves in the population being considered.

04

Potential effects and evidence map

Grade C describes healthy-adult nootropic evidence, not the established ADHD indication. A small acute study improved response inhibition but not learning or sustained attention; another found no improvement in conscious error detection. Clinical ADHD outcomes cannot establish everyday cognitive enhancement in healthy users.

AcuteConfidence: Low

A healthy-volunteer experiment found better stopping of an initiated response, without better sustained attention.

Note A task-specific signal does not demonstrate broad focus or productivity benefits.

Typical dosages and timing

Prescription dosage context140-100 mg/day

The U.S. adult label starts at the lower end, targets 80 mg/day and caps the daily dose at the upper end. This is label context, not a healthy-user dosing range. Liver function, interacting medicines and metabolism affect clinical decisions; the prescriber determines the regimen.

Half-life is not focus duration1

CYP2D6 is a drug-metabolizing enzyme. The two half-life values refer to adults with non-poor versus poor CYP2D6 metabolism; the non-poor group includes normal, intermediate and ultrarapid types. Half-life describes clearance, not when cognitive benefits start or stop. The study-window fact refers to an ADHD trial, not a recommended cycle.

07

Safety, side effects and risk profile

Why the base risk is moderate5
For otherwise healthy adults taking oral capsules at standard prescription doses over weeks to months, low would understate clinically meaningful cardiovascular changes. MHRA reported substantial pulse or blood-pressure rises in about 6-12% of ADHD trial participants, with some persistent changes. These mixed-age patient data are not a healthy-adult incidence estimate. Serious outcomes are not shown to be common; prescription status alone does not justify high risk.
Children and mood changes1
The boxed warning concerns suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric patients aged six and older. Families need close observation, especially early on and around dose changes. Adult pooled data did not show the same increased signal; severe new mood or behavioral changes still need urgent clinical attention.
Cardiovascular caution5
Confidence: High

Blood pressure and pulse can rise enough to require clinical follow-up.

Note Some changes persist or progress; average small changes do not describe every patient.

3/5
B
Interaction risk1
Confidence: High

MAO inhibitors are contraindicated; strong CYP2D6 inhibitors increase exposure.

Note Interaction severity is context-specific, not the sole basis for the overall score.

3/5
B
Overstimulation / insomnia6
Confidence: Medium

Sleep disturbance and activation can occur; drowsiness is also possible.

Note These effects may interfere with normal activities; they do not establish a useful stimulant-like response.

2/5
B
Legal / regulatory risk1
Confidence: High

U.S. prescription-only medicine as of 2026-10-12, not an OTC supplement.

B
Liver / kidney caution7
Confidence: High

Rare liver injury can be severe and has occasionally required transplantation.

Note The event rate is not reliably quantified; most described cases improved after withdrawal, but severity is not always reversible.

3/5
B
Tolerability and urgent symptoms1

Nausea, dry mouth, reduced appetite, constipation, sleep problems, urinary difficulty and sexual effects can occur. Drowsiness can impair driving. Chest pain, fainting, trouble breathing, a prolonged erection with or without pain, or severe new behavioral symptoms need prompt medical assessment rather than dose experimentation.

Rare liver injury7

LiverTox describes rare clinically apparent injury, sometimes progressing to liver failure. Yellow skin or eyes and dark urine warrant prompt clinical assessment. Previous atomoxetine-associated liver injury is an important reason to avoid re-exposure; pre-existing liver disease needs individualized prescribing review.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and psychiatric history6

Pregnancy or breastfeeding, liver disease, and a personal or family history of bipolar illness or suicidality belong in the prescribing assessment. They are separate cautions, not evidence that every otherwise healthy adult has the same risk.

08

Interactions and cautions

Medicines that change exposure1

Fluoxetine, paroxetine and quinidine inhibit CYP2D6 and can raise atomoxetine exposure. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors cannot be combined with it; the U.S. label requires a 14-day separation in either direction. Medication changes require clinician or pharmacist review.

Blood-pressure combinations5

Other medicines that raise blood pressure or heart rate add to the cardiovascular assessment. A supplement or stimulant stack should not be assumed compatible just because each ingredient is sold separately. Share the full product list with the prescriber.

10

How it compares

A useful price comparison unit8

Hold the prescribed medicine, strength, dosage form and capsule count constant, then compare the total payable price including dispensing and delivery charges. Dividing that total by the capsule count gives a like-for-like unit cost. A cheaper bulk powder listing is not a substitute for verified pharmacy capsules.

Brand, ingredient and salt1

Strattera is a brand of atomoxetine. Capsules contain the hydrochloride salt, but their labeled milligram strength is expressed as atomoxetine. Compare the labeled strength, not raw salt weight, and do not open capsules to construct a different dose.

11

Practical buying and quality notes

  • For U.S. purchases, verify state-board pharmacy licensing, a prescription requirement, a physical address and access to a licensed pharmacist. A deep discount or no-prescription checkout is not evidence of a legitimate source. Prices should be compared only after these checks.8

FAQ

What atomoxetine dosage is used for focus?

2

There is no established self-directed nootropic dose for healthy adults. The prescription range above concerns ADHD care; the acute laboratory dose answers a research question, not what an individual should take.

How long does it last, and should it be cycled?

4

Blood clearance and clinical response are different timelines. The cited adult ADHD trial assessed regular daily use through six months, with outcomes at several visits. It did not validate an on-off nootropic cycle or a guaranteed number of productive hours after a capsule.

Can the cheapest online offer be the best choice?

8

Only compare prices after confirming a legitimate pharmacy and the exact prescribed product. A storefront listing, certificate or low price does not replace prescription checks and pharmacy licensing.
