Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin (xanthophyll carotenoid)

Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble xanthophyll carotenoid, often sourced from Haematococcus algae and sold in softgels for antioxidant, skin, eye, exercise and general wellness claims. Human cognition evidence is limited: a 2020 review found only two astaxanthin RCTs in healthy adults and said the small number of studies makes cognitive conclusions difficult. A 2024 meta-analysis found marginal cognitive-accuracy results and no significant reaction-time effect, while exercise-efficiency signals were stronger in training contexts. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid supplement, not a proven nootropic.

Astaxanthin is a red-orange, fat-soluble xanthophyll carotenoid. Supplements are commonly made from Haematococcus algae and are usually sold as oil softgels or algae-derived extracts.

Potential effects and evidence map

Astaxanthin has human trials, but the brain-performance evidence is thin. The 2020 carotenoid cognition review included five lutein studies and only two astaxanthin studies; one astaxanthin study reported verbal episodic memory improvement in middle-aged adults, but the review concluded that the small number of astaxanthin studies did not support a clear positive conclusion.
